Desert Dunk isn’t a delinquent child who gets into trouble in the desert. It’s a Manga, a Japanese comic, but was later turned into Anime, an animated television show.
Manga is a comic book style from Japan with long roots in history, but the modern form dates back to just after WW2. Manga is not just for kids. There are many adult based comics including some on business. Manga are often presented in huge encyclopedia sized books that present episodes of individual sagas, such as Desert Punk, along with many others. American comics that copy the Manga style are called Amerimanga.
In 1917 Japanese artists began working with the cartoon styles that came from America and Europe. That was the start of Anime. In the first one a one of theis a samurai suffered defeat at the hands of a practice dummy. Because the live action Japanese film industry didn’t have the extravagant budgets of Hollywood, Anime became very popular. It was a great way to express many ideas. Manga that become popular are generally turned into Anime. Anime, dubbed into English, is very popular in the United States. FUNimation is the most prolific of the companies that converts the Animes for show on American television and video.
Kanta Mizuno is the main character of Desert Punk. He’s a handyman in post-apocalyptic Japan. At 17, he’s a member of a guild of handyman, and his reputation is he always gets the job done. He acts like a typical 17-year-old when comes to his attitudes on women, but his work ethic is beyond reproach.
Don’t be fooled by the term “handyman.”. Don’t called the Desert Punk if you need some cabinets built. He fixes things by eliminating people. He uses a variety of tools to help him in his work. One of these tools is a winch which brings him up to great heights. But his enemies often fail to see the winch. They become intimidated by what they perceive as his ability to fly.
For a look at the adventures of Desert Punk check out the Manga or the Anime. It’s a lot of fun.
