Devils Tower

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

The famous movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind features the Devils Tower.  It’s impossible not to recognize it.

Devils Tower

The main character has strange visions that feature Devils Tower.  Soon after having the visions he constructs a crew sculpture in his mashed potatoes.  His wife and children don’t like it.  He becomes more and more obsessed with the mountain.  He paints it and then really goes nuts.  He tries to make a scale replica, which prompts his wife to take the kids to grandmother’s house.  It’s a very famous scene in the movie.

After seeing it on television, he goes to visit the real Devils Tower.  Authorities try to stop him, but he makes it past them.  He becomes witness to something wonderful.  Aliens land after communicating with humans using a giant organ.  Then formerly missing people exit the vessel.  Richard’s character is amongst those who choose to travel with the aliens back to their home planet.  This movie would be a good source for a remake.  Later versions shown on television and released on DVD included scenes inside the ship.  It’s rather boring.

Devils Tower

Let’s discuss the actual Devils Tower.  It’s located in Wyoming.  It’s a monolithic igneous intrusion, otherwise known as a volcanic neck.  This is also known as a lava neck.  Magma flowing into a volcanic vent creates it.  This happens with active volcanoes.  It’s not certain that this formation is such a plug.  But many geologists believe it is.

The Indians have a legend about how Devils Tower was formed.  Some bears stumbled on three Indian girls who were picking flowers.  A chase ensued.  The girls called for help, and the Great Spirit replied by raising the land where they stood.  The bears kept trying.  Every time they made it nearly to the top, they slid back to the bottom.  Their claws left the indentations in the side of the structure.

A Sioux legend involves two boys far from home.  A great bear named Mato found them.  It had claws the size of tepees, and it wanted to eat the boys for breakfast.  They asked the creator to offer some help.  He did, raising the ground beneath them.  Mato tried to climb up from all sides, but found it impossible.  The marks from its great claws can still be seen.

Whether fantastic tales of giant bears or friendly aliens the Devils Tower is a great place to visit.

The Devil Wears Prada

There’s been many things named the Devil Wears Prada – a movie, a novel, a rock band, and even a TV series.  Let’s take a look at the movie.

The Devil Wears Prada

In 2003 everyone was reading the Devil Wears Prada.  As with many successful novels it inspired Hollywood to create a movie.  Novels become movies because of the built in audience.  Regardless of reviews, readers want to see what they’ve read on the screen.  Hollywood loves a base audience.  That reduces the risk that a movie will lose money.  Hollywood is all about money.

A film can’t be exactly the same as a novel.  Many changes are made.  Most buildings sit on concrete foundations.  That doesn’t mean the building is made out of concrete.  It’s generally steel and glass.  Don’t be angry when the movie is not the same as the book.

This is the plot.  A girl graduates then takes a job as assistant to a high powered fashion editor.  She’s kind of out of place in the fashion world.  She has to take on characteristics of the people she once disliked in order to keep the job.  When a coworker who often makes fun of her makes a big mistake Andrea saves the day.  As a reward she’s invited to travel to Paris for a show.  While there she witnesses her boss ruthlessly destroy a coworker in order to save her own position.

The girl realizes she has become the very thing she once hated.  She leaves the magazine to return to her boyfriend and a job as a journalist.  The editor and others at the magazine now respect her.  She learns about it when the ruthless magazine editor gives her a glowing reference.

It was very popular.  Probably because of two things.  The first is that built in novel audience.  More than likely many former readers went out to see the movie.  Secondly, it delivers a wholesome message.  The moral is that a person should be true to themselves no matter the situation.

If you haven’t already seen the Devil Wears Prada, it’s a good idea to rent.  Or read the book.  Or both.

Black Snake Moan Movie Review

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Based on both a song and a novel, Black Snake Moan is a 2007 film that focuses on the Mississippi Blues Movement. The film reception was not at all fabulous among critics as some rejected it for dealing with a messy plot, while others had overt critical attitudes over the sexualized violence that characterizes the film. Starring Samuel L. Jackson, Chrisitna Ricci and Justin Timberlake, Black Snake Moan reveals lots of African American issues, exposes drug abuse, bitterness and sexual addiction cases. At the origin of the film lies a novel by George Eliot written in 1861, Silas Marner, while the soundtrack is inspired by the Blind Lemon Jefferson song created in the late 20s.  auto insurance online quote

The cast of Black Snake Moan committed to such an extent to this project that significant parts of their lives had to get adapted to the demands of the script: thus, Samuel L. Jackson got to spend around six hours a day, for six months to only learn to play blues guitar. Then, another relevant example here is the sickly look that Christina Ricci got by eating only food with low nutritional value and walking about almost naked just to get into the character’s skin better. A hot debate issued due to the misogynistic promotion of the film, which was considered rather offensive to women.  auto insurance quote

Consequently, when we have to sum up the public success of Black Snake Moan, the film was not by far the hit everyone expected. Yet, good critical appreciations were also formulated, but more reserved than the aggression of the negative criticism. The main problem identified in the promotional campaign for the film advertising  was that it emphasized promiscuity and it tried to attract the attention of college boys audience instead of addressing wider public categories. Hence, Christina Ricci was one of the film cast members who took a stand against this form of advertising, making it unpardonable and without precedent in her film career.

A better outcome resulted from the release of the Black Snake Moan soundtrack collection at the beginning of 2007. The songs feature several artists, with three tracks being performed by Samuel L. Jackson himself. The album includes a total of seventeen tracks covering both classic and modern blues; the album registered great sale rates, as Blues fans were actually eager to get a new approach to such a dear and sentimental music style. Critics also had a very positive attitude much better than the other critical appreciations passed on the film, Black Snake Moan.  car insurance quote
