Ever since its creation, Americans have always been fascinated by the television. It is a worldwide phenomenon and is currently the leading form of media ahead of print media and radio media. Although the internet has taken away some interest, the television is still the top source of all news and entertainment programs we all love and crave. From cartoons to reality shows to TV series, they all occupy our time and keep us entertained. There are a lot of different shows available however not all TV companies give us all the shows we want or sometimes give more than we want. Good thing there are a number of television providers to choose from.

If having local television just doesn’t work for you then the next option is to subscribe to a cable company. There are a lot of different packages cable companies offer and they have different channels. It may be Time Warner cable, Cox, Comcast cable, Charter cable or Bright House cable, they have different packages to offer and it depends solely upon your choice as to which one is the best.

Then there is the choice of satellite television between Dish network and Direct TV. Satellite television offers the most choices of channels and programs and they usually have most of the channels and programs cable television has. However, this is the most expensive choice as you have to purchase a satellite receiver.

Whatever your taste is, there are a lot of different choices you can choose from to satisfy your every day television needs. One of the smart things to do before selecting a pay TV provider is to compare services.  For example, doing a side by side comparison of DirecTV or Comcast will give you an idea of which company gives you the channels and services you want. Satellite TV Offers More Than Cable

I’ve been wanting to get rid of BrightHouse cable TV service for a long time. The issue is they give you a good deal with their bundles that include telepone, hi speed internet, and television service. When customers need to disconnect one of these, you miss out on the savings of the package.

But the cable TV service just has to go, as the channel selection and quality is below average. There is so much talk today about HD, there isn’t much choice with my provider. So I started doing a little research on who else was providing service in my neck of the woods.

I am fortunate to be one of the individuals who have a few choices. Unlike a few people who can only choose from either the cable company or Dish television, I have a third option in this region. The phone company in this area has been enhancing their network. So I have another consideration with U-verse from AT&T.

That doesn’t of course mean I won’t have similar problems. It would place someone in the same boat as with the cable TV company, as the telephone guys want me to bundle their television service with high speed and voice service. If the deal is good, customers will be satisfied. Then again if the service is poor you are in the same situation that I’m in now with the cable operator.

The reviews I found on the internet are fairly good on telecom television service. Because it is new, there is always a learning curve with a service like this, and some customers write bad reviews. Some of those reviews are the quite amusing, simply for the reason people decide to write a bad review on their horrible experience and share it on the web. Unhappy customers rail on the company like it is some huge conspiracy to screw the customer, like the company does not want to make money!

Another option I’m looking into is of course satellite television. Because we have six television viewers in the home, we usually buy a premium cable television package. The satellite companies seem to be pretty even, as the Premier DirecTV package and the DISH Network America’s everything package are both right around $110 a month. Sure that’s pretty pricey for pay TV, but if you make the comparison with treating your family to dinner and a show, the entertainment value is comparable.

Cable and Satellite Offer More Sports Today

Subscribers to satellite and cable television literally have hundreds of choices when it comes to sports programming. While 20 years ago you might find two college football games on Saturday and two pro games on Sunday, today you can literally pick from two dozen or more games every weekend.

The motto today is “Content is King” and as the saying goes the networks want to deliver as much content as possible to the end user so they can sell more advertising. Quite a few new all-sports networks have popped up in the past couple of years. Some of these include Altitude Sports, which carries Nuggets from Denver and Colorado Avalanche games, and also the Big 10 network and the mtn, the network of the Mountain West conference.

Sure these channels are good for folks in certain parts of the nation, but disputes between the providers of sports programming and those who deliver the content have resulted in difficulties to the customer. For example, the Big Ten Network began broadcasting in 2007, but the network was in a carraige dispute with big cable provider Time Warner. Customers of Time Warner in Wisconsin were unable to see some of the local teams play due to this dispute. While the battle continued for a whole year, the parties came to terms before the 2008 season, so subscribers could stay with Time Warner rather than having to switch over to one of the satellite TV companies like DISH Network or DirecTV.

Specialized sports packages are another issue to deal with for the customer. Some Time Warner cable customers have switched to DirecTV because the NFL Sunday ticket is exlusively on satellite television. This has upset some Comcast and DISH Network customers, who do not understand why a package Sunday Ticket isn’t available to every provider. Other sports bundles though are more friendly to subscribers, like the National Hocky League Center Ice and the NBA League Pass, which are available on almost every cable TV and satellite provider.

Shop Smartly for HD Service

In today’s world people are looking to maximize their entertainment dollar. High fuel prices, a slowing economy, and higher food prices are putting the squeeze on citizens. Fortunately, one of the great values in entertainment is your cable or satellite television service.

If you take a moment and think about it, anyone can get a bundle including over 100 stations including commercial-free movie channels like HBO and Encore for about $100 dollars a month. That is less than you usually spend for dinner and a movie. The latest and greatest in the pay TV market is HD, or high definition service. What should you consider when hooking up that new flat screen TV you just purchased?

Don’t forget that your standard cable or satellite TV service is not in hi-def. You have to specifically purchase a programming package that features this type of programming. So where do you begin?

Cable TV providers like Time Warner also have some great offerings, such as HD on-demand. Ask exactly how much upgrading to HD will be, and if you need additional equipment.

If what they offer is not what you need, do a little comparison shopping. The newest deals include an all hi-def package from DISH Network called Turbo HD Bronze. Direct TV offers HD service for just $9.99 per month. Prices are different with cable television companies across the country, so you will have to call your local company to see what the price is for high definition.

Another factor to consider is that some telecom companies now offer TV service. AT&T now offers their U-verse service in many areas along with telephone and DSL. Verizon is also in the game, offering their fiber to the home service FiOS in limited neighborhoods. It is advisable that you compare services side-by-side, such as Direct TV against Uverse. These developments are a benefit to the customer, as more competition encourages low costs in the end.
